Frisbee
From Futurepedia, the Back to the Future Wiki
Frisbees were flying discs invented in the 20th century as recreational items to throw at a target or for someone else to catch. Their name comes from the Frisbie Pie Company of Bridgeport, Conn. which made pies from 1871 to 1958; the name of the company was embossed on the inside of pie pans.
While in 1885, Marty McFly threw a Frisbee pie pan at Buford Tannen forcing him to miss his shot at Doc Brown.
[edit] Behind the scenes
In reality, the existence of a Frisbie pie in Hill Valley would have been unlikely because Part III takes place in California and the Frisbie Pie Company did not distribute outside New England. The presence of a Frisbie pie plate in the Old West may have been literary license on the part of the screenwriter. Baked goods in the 1800s were distributed within relatively confined areas, due to their perishable nature. However, it is conceivable that a Frisbie tin might have traveled out west in a bundle of household goods, and been used for baking homemade pies.
