MediaWiki:Uploadtext

From Futurepedia, the Back to the Future Wiki

Use the form below to upload files, to view or search previously uploaded images go to the list of uploaded files, uploads and deletions are also logged in the upload log.

All uploads must comply with Futurepedia's image use policy.

To include the image in a page, use a link in the form , or for directly linking to the file.

Please use the correct format for images.

 • Film screenshots, game screenshots, colored artwork, photos and other images with "natural" colors and smooth color transitions should be uploaded in the JPEG format. By the very nature of Futurepedia, such images are predominant.
 • Logos, program window screenshots and other images with relatively few colors, but sharp color transitions should be uploaded in the PNG format.
 • Optionally, PNG/JPEG images created by the uploader can be complemented by an XCF (GIMP native format) or SVG (Inkscape native format and Web standard) source, for vector and multilayered raster graphics respectively. They should not be included in articles, merely uploaded for reference.

If you upload a JPEG or PNG graphic that was downloaded verbatim from the Web or underwent minimal modifications (like cropping), please do not resave them in another format; if you edited them, save them in the same format you acquired them in. In particular, resaving JPEG images as PNGs is completely pointless, as it does not remove compression artifacts and merely increases image size.

Important technical notes::
 1. Please do not use GIFs. Images with 256 colors or less should be saved as PNG files. Animated images are the only ones that should ever be in GIF format, but using animations here is actively discouraged.
 2. You absolutely, positively, cannot upload a file larger than 4,194,304 bytes (4 megabytes). This limit is set by Wikia staff and cannot be changed by Futurepedia administration.
 3. MediaWiki software and/or images.wikia.com hates large progressive JPEGs and will not display them properly. The reason for this bug has yet to be found and the definition of "large" has yet to be determined.
 4. Don't use lossless JPEG format. The server can't tell the difference when uploading, can't make it into thumbnails, and no browser supports it properly.

Copy and paste the following code and fill in the correct information to properly source your image.

 • The "attention" field will generally not be used on a new upload, except for Notorphan.
 • The "description" field should be used for an accurate description of the file's contents. This information should be listed whether or not the template is used.
 • The "source" field should list the specific source that the item comes from. Page numbers are optional but encouraged. If the source is a website, the URL is mandatory. This information should be listed whether or not the template is used.
 • "Author" is an optional field for author/artist information.
 • "Filespecs" should be used to list specific information about any editing or processing the file has undergone -- this is critical for any image which has been modified from the original source. This information should be listed whether or not the template is used.
 • "Licensing" is an absolutely non-optional field which must be used to indicate the license, and "GFDL" or "public domain" licenses must not be used for anything copyrighted by Universal or an affiliate. This information should be listed whether or not the template is used.
 • "Other versions" should be used to indicate when alternate but non-duplicate versions or formats of a file are available.

If you just skipped past everything above to get to the part where you upload the file, your upload will probably be deleted!
